Dr. Casey is the Sackler Professor and Director of the Sacker Institute for Developmental Psychobiology at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City where she holds appointments in the Departments of Psychiatry and Neuroscience and an adjunct appointment at The Rockefeller University. She is a world leader in brain imaging and its use in understanding typical and atypical development with an emphasis on understanding the brain basis of adolescent decision making. Her discoveries about the adolescent brain have been highlighted by NPR, PBS, New York Times, Wall Street Journal and National Geographic and have implications for juvenile justice and mental health reform. Dr. Casey is a native of North Carolina where she received her bachelor and masters degrees from Appalachian State University in psychology. She subsequently received her doctorate from the University of South Carolina and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). She has served on several advisory boards including the NIMH Board of Scientific Counselors and NIMH Council, the Scientific Advisory Board for the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation, the Advisory Board for the Human Connectome Project’s Lifespan Pilot Study, the National Research Council Board of Children, Youth and Families, and NRC and IOM committees of the National Academies on the Science of Adolescent Risk Taking, Assessing Juvenile Justice Reform, and Sports Related Concussions in Youth.
